The Croatian Heritage Museum & Library is pleased to announce their new folk art exhibit, “Maiden, Mother, Woman of Wisdom.” The main focus of the exhibit is to show the role in society, of a Croatian woman in the past, when marriage was her only option. Women were trying to find their social place within what society imposed on them. The symbolic meaning of the headdress indicates a social place for women in patriarchal societies.
The influence of headdresses and explanations of the customs for various regions of Croatia will be displayed in the exhibit. A wedding traditions book is being prepared for publication by the same title as the exhibit and will be for sale for those brides who wish to incorporate some of the wedding customs into their modern day ceremony.
Frances Babic a well known local, Eastern European studies, research professor, is the curator for this exhibit and main writer for the book of wedding traditions. She will present a program explaining the exhibit at 3:00pm on Sunday, February 14, 2010.
The exhibit project is supported by the Ohio Arts Council. We would like acknowledge and give special thanks to Stanka Kordic for her beautiful artwork. This exhibit is featuring some of the folkwear from the collections of Stjepan Vlahovic, Mr. & Mrs. Marko Saric, and Mrs. Daugirdas. Color Nation Hair Salon stylists donated their professional services in creating the special hairstyles worn for wedding ceremonies across Croatia. Milka Vrataric and Zlata Spoljaric helped recreate some of the folkdress.
